One Reader's Story about Elliot Lake, Bears and Waterfalls. Joe and Marion from the Brampton area, sent us in a few photos and a write up about their week-long ATV trip up to Elliot Lake. Not only did they come across a few bears, and even less people but one adventure led them to a gorgeous waterfall – a perfect summer trip if you ask us.
“Here are some pictures that my wife and I took during our UTV vacation north of Elliot Lake. There are lots of logging roads at the very north end of Hwy 639 and numerous trails off of the roads. It is very remote and the first day we drove over 80 km through the bush and did not see one human being (we did see bears mind you). It was extremely hot the whole week so we did not see any moose as they were deep in the swamps trying to keep cool. Instead of going back the way we came, we decided to do a big loop and traveled another 50 km to get back to our lodge (taking this route we actually saw two people). During our adventure we came across one of the most beautiful waterfalls we have ever seen. Lots of beautiful scenery and lots of clear cuts from logging.
One day we took another trail that on a scale of 1 (easy) to 10 (difficult) it started at a 5 and went up to a 9. We went through deep bog, swamp, boulders (not rocks) and had to cut trees to clear the path. We only went in about 5 kms but it took us over 4 hours to do it.
Because we were traveling alone, I did take some added precautions (to comfort my wife of course) by having a UHF radio (with extra batteries), Bear Spray and a rifle with me just in case we broke down and had to walk back to the lodge or to get help.”
A big thank you to Joe and Marion for providing their story and photos – we love hearing from our readers! If you have something you’d like to send us, we’d be happy to hear from you too!
